.3emHelping to create a kinder community.

Educators and community leaders recognize the character building benefits of our humane education programs and have consistently contacted us to present programs at their schools, community centers, or here at the RVSPCA.  To help deliver our message, we have expanded our outreach program to include KIND News™. KIND News™ has been published since 1983 and is currently used as a curriculum supplement in 35,000 elementary school classrooms nationwide. This classroom newspaper created by the Humane Society of the U.S. teaches children about kindness and respect for people, animals and the environment.

To facilitate the humane education efforts of the RVSPCA, the Banfield Charitable Trust has awarded a grant to the organization to help offset some of the cost of providing Kind News™ to elementary students in our area.

This is just one of many notes received from students receiving Kind News™ as a part of their curriculum.

Sponsorships are being solicited to further support the program for the 2010-2011 school year.

The humane education program has gained momentum with 190 classrooms participating (representing 4,145 students) for the 2010-11 school year!

By joining the RVSPCA's "Adopt-a-Classroom" program, each $30 tax-deductible contribution provides one classroom with 28 copies of KIND News™ each month, September-May.  Each issue is tailored to K-2, 3-4 or 5-6 grade classrooms with a teacher's guide for each issue.  It also includes a teacher resource book of reproducible worksheets, a calendar of fun facts on helping animals and I.D. cards for the students.  To sponsor a classroom online, click here and go to "Donate Now", or contact Carolyn Schwanhausser for more information.

4,145 students will receive Kind News™ during the 2010-11 school year.

Your support of the Adopt-a-Classroom program allows the RVSPCA to provide humane education to elementary students in the Roanoke Valley area. Sponsor a classroom in honor of a special teacher or student by clicking here.
